Is it different in the UK, do you have to pay for lessons to get your license? You can't have your folks teach you or what not?

That said, while I was up in Scotland my dad decided to teach me how to drive a manual and a cop ended up behind us, unfortunately every time I had to go down a gear I stalled out. My sister was worried I'd get pulled over, but I explained that it wasn't illegal to stall out a car and I'd just pull out the waterworks southern drawl and explain that this car was a lot different then the truck that I've never drove.

No, we don't give out licenses to anyone who can barely drive around the sheriffs office. I don't know how it works in the UK, but over here you need to pass the theoretical exam before you can even touch a car. If you pass that you can get lessons and if the instructor thinks you're good enough you can do the practical exam with another instructor who will decide if you will get a license or not. The practical exam over here includes driving on slopes (in a flat country, yeah...) and other special maneuvers, park between two cars, driving on a crowded highway, basic traffc rules and you have got to have your car set up like it's supposed to be (chair in the right position, mirrors in the right position, tyre pressure, enough brake fluid, oil and water).

Tim: in the UK it's the same, but you don't need to do the theory before you can start practical (so long as there's someone in the car with you who has a licence of course). You still have to pass a theory before you get your full licence though.

Parents can teach kids to drive but they'll never pass the test without a couple of lessons to clean up bad habits. They'll fail you for the tiniest mistake over here (not checking your mirrors 100 times, not putting the handbrake on when you stop at a stop sign, running people over...).

I didn't realise it was different in the US, how's it done over there?

I think it has changed some since i was 16. But at that time, once you turned 16 you could go take a 20 question multiple choice test to get your Permit, which means you can drive a car with another licensed driver in the car. You are required to take one 5 hour class on safety. Once that is done you can schedule your road test, which consists of driving less than a mile in normal traffic, parallel parking and thats really all. As long as you do all the shit your supposed to like signaling, mirror checking, complete stops ect.. you pass and go get your license. they dont care about oil, gas, tire pressure stuff.
Now i think there is some kind of 6 month period you have to wait before scheduling your road test. But i had my license about a month and a half after i turned 16 and passed my road test on the first try.

Isn't it different per state? When my aunt and uncle used to live in the States (Texas in this case) my aunt got her drivers license by getting in a car with the local sheriff, drive around the sheriffs department and that was it. But this all happened in the early eighties, so I hope for your sake it's different now.

in arkansas, at 14 you take a short multiple choice quiz and you get a permit. a month later you go back and take the driving portion. just a drive around the block with a state officer. then you get to go to the dmv and get your picture taken and all that fancy stuff. at 16 you go get your picture taken again and you can now drive without an adult. you can get a special permit before 16 that lets you drive without an adult if you qualify. and at 14 you can drive a motorcycle on the streets if it's under 250cc.

also, i got online just now to check tom's twitter to see if he was giving away guest list spots and he had just then posted it. i think i replied less than a minute after his post... feel like a crazy person. but yeah. hope i get em.

rain down - rvivr
a brief lesson in repetition - red city radio
call it off - tegan and sara
cold weather gear - menzingers
clap hands two guns - menzingers
monumental - flatliners
werewolf shame - direct hit
35% - against me
no division - hot water music
nothing can kill the grimace - mixtapes

in that order. I love you

I just have a hard time getting into the Menzingers. I've tried multiple times, and have seen them live (twice).

So you're allowed to drive a motorcycle or a car (in somebody's company) at 14 but you're not allowed to drink alcohol until you're 21? Wow.

Stoked to listen to the playlist, I've never heard of Direct Hit.
