but hey, he's got people reading. that's cool. they should just read other things, too.

I agree. I know hella people who think of chuck as a god-like genius who blows their mind with everything he does, but he can be very repetitive. His books are pretty good individually, but when grouped together, you can see how repetitive they are.

Chuck Palahniuk is kind of a figure-head to a culture of cheap thrill seekers, and people who want to sound like 'deep thinkers.'

ps, I'm not implying that people who read from palahniuk are shallow, nor am I implying that I am any better than people who like chucks books. I'm just saying that there are a lot of people who just throw out his name when they want to sound educated, or cool.

does this make any sense to anyone else? or am I just babbling?

^I agree.

I liked the first two books I read by Palahnuik (Fight Club and Survivor) but I was in middle school. And recently I read Invisible Monsters, and it was SO BAD.

I'm going to ruin the twist at the end, so...spoiler alert...but he always puts these incredibly contrived twists at the end anyways. How is the person she's been hanging out with the whole time her dead brother with a sex change and she doesn't even notice???? What the fuck is that cheap shit Suspect Question

he had a terrible plot twist in choke, too. that's what i've always found so suprising about him. if he had never written fight club, anything with as terrible of a plot twist as that would NEVER be published. i've been taking writing workshops for 6 years now (goodgod!) and every time someone submits a story with a plot twist it gets treated like its the same type of fodder as the national enquirer. the writer gets torn to shreds. and cries, sometimes.

He's good if you're a slighty confused and socially awkward sophomore in high school. He was the first author I actually read more than one book by for leisure. Now my mom is all about him, which is kind of weird haha.

I took out a book from the library near my house called Jesus, Interrupted. It's about contradictions in the Bible, butI haven't really read much of it so far. Sad

Loved Fight Club, but it set the bar high and I haven't been able to get into Palahniuk as much since. I liked Diary, though it was a bit over the top at times.

To call him "marginal talent at best" is a bit unfair in my opinion, and I disagree that he's just writing about nihilism. but it's all about what you take away from the book, so I won't argue over someone's interpretation.

I like him because he's over the top in descriptions and doesn't turn away from anything.
It's a trait I'd like to see more of in my writing.

PostSubject: Re: Books!!   Thu Jul 23, 2009 5:43 pm

sure, one of my favorite parts of fight club is when he describes how to make a bomb.

another scene in survivor, in the first chapter i believe, when he's on the plane and it's going down, he talks about the physics of the plane crashing and what it would be like to experience it.

I haven't read these books in a while and I don't have them handy so I guess I can't quote directly, but those are a few examples of why I like him.

Some people find that kind of writing too detail oriented, like, why would you care about every spec of detail, but for me, it's what I dig. It helps get me into the story.

Diary and haunted have a few gross scenes that are nicely done too.

Wow, that's not much for elaboraiton, and maybe I just haven't read as good of authors as you have, but that's my favorite part of Palahniuk.

I thought Survivor was alright...
Although it has been a while since I read it.

Has anyone read this?

If not, I recommend you do NOW.
Right this second.
Do it.

Jesus, Interrupted is really interesting so far. I also went kind of crazy at my school's book store the other day and bought Les Miserables, Arabian Nights, Jane Eyre, and I Know Why the Caged Bird sings. My theory is that if I buy them, I'll force myself to read them since I used my own money and because they'll always be lingering without a due date.

Right now I'm reading Taming The Beast: Charles Manson's Life Behind Bars which is pretty great and I recommend it to everyone.

I've always been indifferent toward Charles Manson..I'm passionate about studying serial killers/all people who are kinda psycho and Charles Manson has always seemed annoying & overrated to me. This book is a really insightful look at him though, as it's written by his prison counselor Edward George who spent a long time working with him. Charles Manson is actually pretty hilarious.

Besides the works of Rand, "Stranger in a Strange Land" is dearest to me. I'm currently reading "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by the same author, Robert A. Heinlein, and it's amazing so far. Free market armed revolt IN SPACE! Very Happy

Anyone read The Road by Cormac Mcarthy?

I read it recently. Its really...sad, but so good.
They're making amovie out of it, but I have no idea how thats going to work. Its really not an action story, which is what its probably going to turn out to be in the movie. But I'll see it any way just for Charlize Theron.
Personally, I thought of it as an extended metaphor for how life sucks.

Quote :

I've heard good things and bad things about this book, which makes me want to read it.

All the footage that I've seen of him makes him seem like a total nut, as opposed to other serial killers who seem normal and are complete psychos. Its funny that he seems so crazy and still managed to manipulate people so effectively.

And that book has treated me very well.

I finished The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell on the flight to FL. Good book about "that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire."
