Honestly, for me it WOULD be Tom Gabel. Nobody else's work has had so much of an impact on my life and how I choose to live it.

yeah but other than gabel im going with ian mackaye, im not straight edge but what ian did with that is amazing and i respect him so much for it.

I love this song, but the nerd in me wishes that a couple of the lyrics were changed so as to obscure the meaning just enough that it could be about any art, and not just music.

Though it seems as if Gabel writes songs from a personal vantage, and has no real interest in making himself into a sort of everyman character. I guess he just sings what he knows, and what he knows is what he does, and let's face it, how many people are in a successful band? Though I keep fighting the urge to try to lure Tom Gabel into a discussion about the role of the artist in his or her art. But he actually has shit to do.

I dunno, that's an interesting theory, but it seems like it would be kind of cocky to write a song like that. Tom sounds so sad and desperate in the song, I really believe he's singing to somebody else.

This song reminds me of when I hear my favorite bands write the things I'm thinking. Then I think, "ah ha! Thats it!" But then I think, "shit, now I can never write that song, because I can not better that." So this song feels like that, except twice. If that makes any sense...
