Jay Reatard as passed away today : (
R.I.P
Incredibly sad news began swirling around the Internet today that suggested that critically beloved indie rocker Jay Reatard had been found dead in his home in Memphis. Though it remained merely a rumor for much of the morning, within the past hour the singer and songwriter's current label, Matador Records, confirmed that he had passed away at the age of 29.
"Jay was as full of life as anyone we've ever met, and responsible for so many memorable moments as a person and artist," Matador's statement read. "We’re honored to have known and worked with him, and we will miss him terribly."
Jay began his career as the lead singer of the garage rock band The Reatards. He didn't come into the critical spotlight, however, until the late in the '00s, when he began releasing a series of acclaimed solo records. His last official release, Watch Me Fall, was heralded by critics and was named one of the year's best by this website. He was truly an artist who was hitting his stride and will be severely missed.
If you would like to pay your respects, you can do so at his official profile.
Last year, we premiered a documentary on Jay titled "Waiting For Something," which provided an intimate and, at times, eerie glimpse into what made him such a unique talent. You can view it below.
