I guess I'd just like to start this thread off asking everybody's opinion on abstinence, or how long they like to wait for sex in a relationship, if at all?

(alright, well, I got the search tool working, and found a few threads on specific sex topics already, but I guess let's just make this a very general sex related discussion thread. talk about whatever the fuck you want related to it.)

Abstinence is good and all that, but I don't like the abstinence-only preaching in a lot of sex-ed programs. In Tanzania, it's especially bad, 'cause the people are so uneducated, they believe so much more. For example, there is a sign somewhere in rural TZ that says something like, "Ukivaa kondomu, utakufa," which is basically, "If you wear a condom, you'll die." It's so fucked up.

Also, in northern Tanzania, I think it was, one of my friends was telling me about how this nurse stays at this village and does sex-ed talks with the people. But, due to the church's prominence there, the priest has to sit with them, and she can't teach them about birth control, only abstinence. The only way she could provide them with condoms was if they came to her afterward. So, some guy came up with an idea: He would keep going to her and get condoms, and then RENT THEM OUT. Basically, he would let people use the condoms, and they would take them back, he would wash them out, and hang them to dry, before renting them out to another person.

Yeah... So apparently at the store front, there were just a bunch of condoms hanging out to dry.

People really need to realize that abstinence-only sex ed programs don't work.

Africa doesn't have the resources to get condoms anymore GOP cut that part of the economic stimulus bill. what about the condom makers? Wont anybody please think about the condom makers!

While I'm certainly not for abstinence-only education about sex, I think teenagers need a better understanding of the consequences of having sex. I sometimes feel lost or behind the times because I've just recently realized how young people are starting to have sex. yes, we should teach kids how to use protection and be safe, but many kids don't understand the implications (i.e. feelings of attachment and then possible heartbreak, damaged reputation, etc).

to sum it up: teach people how to be safe, but keep it in your pants until you know how to be responsible.
