| I was explaining to my brother the other day why I think North Korea is the most dangerous country in the world because their leader has substantial military power and absolutely no fear. Most of the time my ego tells me that I know the right way to handle a situation like this, but I'm completely stumped and quite worried about N Korea's future. _________________ You're teaching your kids to repeat what you did growing up as a dickhead yourself.

| It's not likely they'll do anything unless Kim Jong is actually completely insane. There's no chance of them actually being able to hit us, we have defense for this sort of shit out the wazoo. I have to be honest with you though, I'd feel threatened too when a country who's supposedly trying to fight for peace and disarm the world has been stockpiling their own weapons and invading other countries. I'm sure he's just doing what he thinks is best for his country. ... Maybe. |

| North Korea is scary because they're so unpredictable. They don't have advanced enough technology to make it over here with their weapons yet, but its effing ridiculous how brainwashed and indoctrinated people in that country are. There's this book I really want to read called Escaping North Korea, and I can't remember the name of the guy that wrote it but he was on the Daily Show a week or so ago...He was talking about how this woman had to pick up this pro-democracy literature from South Korea to throw it away, but she couldn't touch it because the regime told her if you touch anything from South Korea your hands will rot off. Kim Jong Il recently had a stroke though, and it makes you wonder what all is going to change and how people are going to react when he dies. He's naming or expected to name his son as his successor. There's speculation that his impending death has a lot to do with why he keeps shooting off missiles into the Sea of Japan though. |

I heard that he had had a stroke, and I was curious myself if he was simply trying to go out in a blaze of glory. The bad thing is, that his son is every bit as evil as he is.
I saw the man you're talking about on the Daily Show. I'm skeptical, merely because it's human nature to be skeptical, if the North Korean people are really as brainwashed as he says, or if they're merely doing these things because they know what kind of punishment they could face otherwise. Clearly, the example you've given is similar to how the American people were indoctrinated to believe that everything that resembles Communism must be crushed, even as we borrowed elements of it to save our own failing monetary system. Clearly, there are many people in N. Korea who believe everything that comes out of Kim Jong's mouth regarding western government, but I just don't understand how it could be such an absolute grip. There are millions (that might be an exaggeration) of starving and homeless in N. Korea.
It's really too bad that government has gotten so powerful in pretty much every country that it makes redemption by force of the people an impossibility. I think it's quite possible that if people didn't fear Kim Jong and his government so much, there would have already been much more of an uprising. |

| when your government cuts all communication off with the outside world for 50+ years its pretty easy to make the people believe what ever you want. I doubt there's much of an education system over there. All money goes toward military use. _________________ nigga what the fuck is juice? i want some grape drink baby... its purple

You're right, I doubt everyone in North Korea is a devout follower of the government. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are skeptical of Kim Jong Il's claims of godliness and his demonization (I don't think that's actually a word but I'm using it anyway) of America, the west and democracy, or they wouldn't be trying to escape. There are also probably those-especially among the people there who are actually doing alright-who wouldn't say a bad word about the dear leader, and probably even more who are scared shitless to say anything.
I've noticed that what usually drives people to finally overthrow their government is the unavailability of food...but it seems they've been living with those conditions for a while now.
Side note-Anyone else find it really upsetting that they've imprisoned Lara Ling and Euna Lee? Its not like we have a surplus of good reporters in the US, and they are some of the few we've got. |

| I think, and I've heard others say, that due to Kim Jong's stroke and the imminent succession of power the launching of missiles and these boastful threats are a way to boost and maintain a sense of nationalism. This way when the power changes hands whether from father to son, or Jong to some aide, the people will view the succession with confidence in the choice. _________________ I'm practicing the art of holding us both up!
